Rigid-Body Dynamics is a term borrowed from the field of classical mechanics.
It describes how systems of interconnected particles (or bodies) move, under the action of an external force. Using this notion as a verbal touchstone, the work draws parallels ー by way of material as well as language ー between the physical science of dynamics and the practice, or process, of making a painting.
This research stems from questioning how the felt, evocative, embodied materiality of things co-exist alongside more calculated, methodical systems of thought, using painting and its expanded physicality as a conduit to explore this duality. The concept of Rigid-Body Dynamics, as it evolves and unfolds over time, also lends itself to a kind of quantum thinking. A seeing of material as particles or fragments that embrace the space of paradox, mysticism and ambiguity.
Taking shape as a low-tech, site-responsive installation, the body of work seen above is collectively composed of found or reclaimed material, activating multiple frames, portals and thresholds in the process. I wanted to orchestrate a physical system ー or network ー of interconnected particles, weaving various forms of ‘painting’ into the fabric of The LAB space, while offering novel perspectives on decision-making and material manipulation.
